Introducing Associate Artist Mark Croasdale
Can you introduce yourself to us?
Hello there! I’m Mark, from Manchester. I’m a theatre maker, art creator, writer & inciter of gentle, radical change through cosy, quality encounters. We might find each other in a theatre, at a party, or passing in the street. We might have a chat over the phone, the page or through a screen. We’ll probably share a crumpet, a cup of tea and have a good chat about lots of our different experiences.
I have a passion for telling stories, something I got from my Baka (grandma) who was a master storyteller. I enjoy anything murder mystery, especially Murder She Wrote, and I have a totally healthy, perfectly usual obsession with Custard Creams.
What kind of work do you love to make?
I love learning! I jump at any opportunity to make work in different ways and about different things which gets me out of my comfort zone. Currently I’m really enjoying exploring visual storytelling and I’m learning lots about illustration and animation too, so I expect that will become a larger part of my practice as a whole. I’m sort of like a magpie, I take things from one arty nest and put them in another just to see what it creates and I love inviting audiences to bring their shiny things to the nest too! It’s rare that you’ll experience my work without having some agency.
Thematically, I like making work all about humanity and our shared experiences of this odd thing called life. Usually I find something in my experience that makes me think, ‘what’s all that about then?’ and I create work so other people can join in my wonderings. I love making work that questions our own stories, that challenges systems we live in. Work that creates safe spaces to explore ourselves and helps us embrace the humour in being human. My favourite work to make gives people permission to be challenged and to speak. It’s comfortable confrontation.
I’m not entirely sure how that’s going to work through film but that’s all part of the fun.
Tell us about what you’re making as part of the Telenovela project?
Well, do you know how memories are made? I don’t, but I’d love to figure it out!
What are memories? How do they form? What makes them ‘memorable’ and how do they shape us?
So, I have a whole bunch of memories swimming around my consciousness. Some of them I remember happening to me but I’m pretty sure some of them are things that I’ve been told, and I’m certain that loads of my memories are from fiction, which can get confusing hey?
I’m creating a short film which tells the story of a gifted memory, one that wasn’t mine but was given to me over time, after years of a story being shared in such detail that my mind claimed it as its own. My question is, whether this makes it any less real?
If your life was a telenovela, what song would be your theme tune and why?
So I thought this would be so easy, immediately I jumped to the Murder She Wrote theme tune, it’s catchy and brings me so much joy. But, maybe that’s cheating slightly as it really belongs to Jessica Fletcher hey?
So instead I’m going to say ‘Love You’ by The Free Design. It perfectly sums up how my life is an ever-increasing struggle to return to being a child, lols. This song is all about the freedom and complete confidence being a child should be, the joy in the little things and a reminder to live that joy no matter your age.
Mark launches illustration project ‘Flustered Dreams’ (@MyFlusteredDreams) in the next few weeks.

Apresentando o Artista Associado Mark Croasdale
Então eu pensei que isto seria tão fácil, imediatamente saltei para a melodia do tema Murder She Wrote, é cativante e me traz tanta alegria.
Então, em vez disso vou dizer "I Love You" pelo The Free Design.
